Signing up for a CPR class is a smart move. But once you start looking, the choices can feel confusing. BLS? Heartsaver? First Aid? ACLS? What do they all mean, and which one do you need?
Here is a simple guide to help you choose.
BLS (Basic Life Support)
BLS is built for healthcare workers and others who respond to emergencies as part of their job. Think nurses, medical assistants, EMTs, dental staff, and nursing students. It covers CPR for adults, children, and infants, plus how to use an AED and work as a team. If your employer or school asks for “BLS for Healthcare Providers,” this is the one.
Heartsaver CPR/AED
Heartsaver is made for the rest of us — teachers, coaches, daycare staff, gym workers, and anyone who wants to be ready at home or on the job. It teaches the same lifesaving basics in a friendly, easy-to-follow way. No medical background needed.
First Aid
A First Aid course covers everyday injuries and illnesses: cuts, burns, sprains, allergic reactions, and more. Many people pair it with a CPR class for fuller coverage. Some jobs require both.
ACLS and PALS
These are advanced courses for healthcare workers who care for very sick patients. ACLS focuses on adults, and PALS focuses on children. Most people will not need these unless their job calls for it.
Still not sure?
Ask yourself three quick questions:
- Does my job or school require a certain card? If so, that decides it.
- Do I care for kids, older adults, or patients? A course that covers all ages may fit best.
- Do I just want to be ready to help my family or community? Heartsaver is a great place to start.
